New Years Book Chronicles 30-Year Family History

The cancer ‘TRAP’
(American Journal of Pathology) Current research suggests that TNF-receptor associated protein-1 (TRAP-1) may prevent cancer cell death. The related report by Leav et al., “Cytoprotective Mitochondrial Chaperone TRAP-1 as a Novel Molecular Target in Localized and Metastatic Prostate Cancer,” appears in the January 2010 issue of the American Journal of Pathology.

Paternity Testing Without Father and Mother? The German Company bj-diagnostik Investigates that Two babies Separately Left at Charity Institution are Siblings
It is certainly due to personal emergency situations when parents leave behind their children at charity institutions that offer an anonymous hand over (in Germany, the "Babyklappe"), but a recent case revealed that at least one couple left behind two children as new borns at an interval of a few years. If you suspect abandonned children might be siblings, how can you find out? Although results of DNA paternity testing are most accurate when both father and mother are tested, bj-diagnostik is able to perform indirect sibling tests when samples of the alleged father, or even mother, are not available, by using samples of only brothers or sisters to establish the degree of relatedness through mathematical methods. Discovery of 4.4 million-year-old ‘Ardi’ named ‘Breakthrough of the Year’
(University of California – Berkeley) The journal Science has named the discovery of “Ardi,” the oldest hominid skeleton ever found, its “Breakthrough of the Year 2009.” An international team co-led by UC Berkeley’s Tim White took 17 years to assemble and analyze the skeleton and thousands of other fossils found with it. The analysis, published in the Oct. 2 Science, revolutionizes our understanding of the earliest human ancestors appearing not long after the human lineage diverged from that of chimps.
